DoorDash’s $17B Bet on Grocery Data

On October 29, 2026, DoorDash announced a definitive agreement to acquire Instacart for approximately $17 billion, combining DoorDash's 993 million quarterly orders and $1 billion-plus annual ad run rate with Instacart's Carrot Ads platform -  310-plus retailer partners and $331 million in Q3 2026 advertising revenue, up 23% year-over-year.

The deal creates a combined retail media platform with a credible claim to roughly $2.3 billion in annualized advertising revenue, a closed-loop household purchase signal spanning restaurant, grocery, convenience, and CPG and a meaningful alternative to Amazon and Walmart Connect for brands seeking to diversify retail media concentration, at a moment when WPP Media's This Year, Next Year forecasts global Commerce advertising revenue at $199.6 billion in 2026 and growing.

CPG and grocery advertisers should assess whether the combined platform's household purchase data and closed-loop measurement justify rebalancing retail media budgets — while tracking the FTC surveillance-pricing probe, issued the day before the announcement, as a live constraint on how that data estate can ultimately be deployed.
