What the Decline in Reddit Citations Means for Brands

Media Minute is WPP Media's series, specifically crafted to empower our clients and marketers for their intelligence era.

Reddit’s sudden drop in ChatGPT citations is less a story about Reddit disappearing and more a warning about the volatility of AI visibility.

Recent monitoring data shows Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell sharply in mid-August. However, Reddit continues to appear in other major answer engines, suggesting this is currently a ChatGPT-specific shift rather than an industry-wide retreat from community content.

The reason for the decline is not yet confirmed. ChatGPT continues to search Reddit frequently but is selecting it less often for inclusion in final responses. This could reflect a change in how sources are ranked, reweighted or selected, rather than Reddit disappearing from the retrieval process entirely.

What happened?

From mid-August, the percentage of Reddit citations inside ChatGPT Search responses dropped sharply.

But the wider picture is more nuanced.

  • ChatGPT is still searching Reddit more than any other domain, but only 10.7% of those searches ultimately result in a Reddit citation according to Profound.

  • Promptwatch observed a substantial increase in ChatGPT’s use of site-specific searches from the 8th of August, indicating a potential change in retrieval behavior.

This suggests the shift may be occurring later in the process, when sources are ranked and selected for inclusion in an answer. It could reflect reweighting, re-ranking or an experiment, but there is not enough evidence to attribute it to a permanent policy, product or partnership change.

Reddit is still heavily cited in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Grok, and Gemini.

The key point is that Reddit is still being retrieved and referenced. What appears to have changed is how frequently ChatGPT chooses to cite it in the final response.

Why this matters

The immediate temptation is to ask whether brands should now deprioritise Reddit. That is the wrong question.

The more useful question is how brands can build visibility that remains resilient when individual engines change how they retrieve, rank or cite sources.

Edward Cowell, Global VP SEO and GSO at WPP Media, says:

“Reddit’s decline in visible citations does not mean that user-generated content has stopped mattering. It means ChatGPT is becoming more selective about when community content is useful, when official sources are more appropriate, and how much visible authority they should assign to each source type. This is part of a broader maturation of answer engines. Early LLM retrieval often felt like late-1990s search: highly useful, but relatively naïve, inconsistent and open to manipulation. As these platforms develop, they will need stronger mechanisms for source quality, authority, topical relevance and user trust.”

The exact cause of the decline has not been confirmed, so it is too early to conclude that this represents a permanent change in ChatGPT’s approach.

But the change reinforces a broader strategic point: brands cannot build AI visibility around a single platform or source type, and also brands focused solely on Reddit’s influence over answer engine results may have overlooked its broader value of audience insight.

Community content can still help AI systems understand how people talk about products, where they encounter friction and what influences their decisions. However, brands also need strong owned content, publisher relationships, expert perspectives and credible third-party coverage.

The lesson is not that one source type has won. It is that authority needs to exist across a connected system.

What it does not mean

Reddit is not irrelevant.

It still captures authentic language, category friction and real decision-making. For transactional, comparison and lived-experience prompts, community discussions may continue to provide information that official brand content does not.

The decline also does not mean Reddit has lost visibility across AI search. The sharp break is currently concentrated in ChatGPT, while Reddit continues to appear in citations from other major answer engines.

Away from AI citations Reddit remains a trusted partner for WPP Media with a growing and engaged audience. Opportunities for advertisers on Reddit are evolving rapidly with an increasing number of WPP Media brands exploring direct advertising on the platform.

The biggest risk is over-correction.

Reddit should be treated as an insight layer, not the strategy. Reddit has a dedicated and passionate user base, it reveals questions, objections, language and experience gaps that brands need to answer more credibly elsewhere.

Social, creator and community strategies should continue, but as a part of integrated communications plans rather than as isolated AI-gaming tactics.

Strategic implications for brands

1. Do not build AI visibility on a single source type.

A resilient Generative Search Optimization (GSO) strategy needs multiple forms of authority: owned content, publisher coverage, expert validation, product information, structured data, reviews, creator content and high-quality social signals.

Changes to any one platform or answer engine should not undermine the entire strategy.

2. Treat brand.com as a source that answer engines may query directly.

Brand websites need clear content architecture, crawlable pages, strong entity signals and content mapped to genuine user intent.

The objective is not simply to produce more content. It is to make reliable information easier for people and answer engines to find, understand and use.

3. Use Reddit to understand the experience gap.

Reddit remains valuable because it reveals real questions, objections and experiences that brands may not see elsewhere.

The role of Reddit is not to drive citation volume. It is to help brands create more real consumer questions, experiences and concerns.

4. Prioritize authoritative third-party presence.

Publisher coverage, reviews, expert commentary and credible third-party sources can all influence how brands appear in answer engines.

The lesson is not that Reddit matters less. It is that authority should be built across multiple locations rather than any single source.

5. Be careful with paid “AI visibility” claims.

Publisher coverage, reviews, expert commentary and credible third-party sources can all influence how brands appear in answer engines.

The lesson is not that Reddit matters less. It is that authority should be built authentically across multiple signals rather than any single source.

What brands should do now

Brands should resist the urge to overreact.

A change in one LLM is not enough to justify changing an established Generative Search Optimisation strategy. The more important task is understanding where visibility exists across different engines, which sources are being cited, and how those patterns evolve over time.

The broader lesson remains unchanged: visibility built on a single platform, source type or answer engine is vulnerable to change. Strong GSO strategies depend on a mix of owned content, authoritative third-party sources, expert validation and a clear understanding of audience needs.

Reddit remains valuable, not because it generates citations, but because it continues to provide insight into the questions, objections and experiences that shape consumer decisions.

Reddit's advertising platform also remains an exciting prospect for brands, many of whom are exploring ways to reach growing and engaged audiences on the platform.

Our Point of View

One possible interpretation is that the answer engines are becoming more sophisticated in how they retrieve, evaluate and present information, although the precise cause of this shift remains unclear.

For brands, the lesson is not to abandon Reddit. It is to avoid becoming dependent on any single source of visibility, and to build out your entire ecosystem of influence.

Strong brands will use Reddit to understand real customer questions, engage authentically with consumers, build authoritative content that answers them, and create a broader presence across the sources that people and answer engines trust.
